WHARVES is an indie rock band based in Lennox Head on the far north coast of NSW Australia. Members Matt Collins (Vocals, Guitar), Mike Watson (Guitar), Scott Finch (Bass) and Fraser Perrott (Drums) formed only just over 2 years ago but have firmly cemented themselves as a highly popular member of the Australian indie scene.
In 2018 WHARVES waltz right back into the spotlight with new single ‘Mo’s Desert Clubhouse’, a jaunty belter with ferocious guitars and spooky vocals. The second single off their debut EP ‘Sooner or Later’, which is due out Friday 5th October, WHARVES’ latest offering found its charm with creative input from producer and mixer Steven Schram (San Cisco, Tiny Little Houses).
The track follows the release of ‘High School Hero’, the EP’s first single and all-round mover and shaker. The band’s lead singer, Matt Collins, describes the organic process of the song and how “The music for this track came from our Sapphire Sessions in March 2018. We stayed in a beautiful house near the beach in Coffs Harbour and jammed for 3 days straight. We pretty much wrote the music there and then”. Collins also explains that “The lyrics were inspired by a roadtrip I took in May with the part owner of the Gold Coast arts venue "Mo's Desert Clubhouse". She was explaining her frustrations with the local Council pretty much bullying them into closing. I can't stand how narrow-minded people in power can be, the arts are one of the most important things in life, without art, life isn't worth living. It is not a crime to dance"
Australian music powerhouse triple j gave the band its dues when it awarded them the highly coveted unearthed slot to open the 2017 Splendour in the Grass Festival off the back of their hit track ‘Man You Want Me to Be’ which has since passed 95,000 streams on Spotify.
Overseas interest has recently kicked off with WHARVES track ‘Man You Want Me to Be’ premiering on USA radio and debuting at a stunning #21 on the SubModern singles charts. Another track “It’s You” recently featured on a World Surfing League video which saw ¼ million social media views.
WHARVES amazing live set has been in demand with them supporting bands such as Wolfmother, Rolling Blackouts Costal Fever, Kingswood, Ocean Alley and Jack River and playing Festivals such as Falls Festival, Festival of the Sun and showcasing at Bigsound Festival.
WHARVES have even created their own all ages music festival “Beach Sounds” with co-promoter Lennox Groove and it has quickly made its mark as a taste-maker festival to keep an eye on.
